Fall Prevention Workshop ... Why?

Five Major Reasons to Practice and Exercise for Fall Prevention:

1. Improved Balance and Coordination: Regular exercise strengthens muscles and enhances coordination, reducing the likelihood of losing balance and falling.
2. Increased Muscle Strength: Stronger muscles, particularly in the legs and core, provide better support for the body, helping seniors maintain stability during daily activities.
3. Enhanced Bone Health: Weight-bearing and resistance exercises improve bone density, reducing the risk of fractures if a fall occurs.
4. Better Reaction Time: Exercises that improve reflexes and proprioception help seniors react more quickly to prevent a fall when they trip or stumble.
5. Increased Confidence and Mobility: Practicing fall prevention exercises boosts confidence in movement,  providing encouragement to stay active and reducing fear of falling, which can otherwise lead to reduced activity and higher fall risk.

Fall Prevention Workshop ... What?

The Top Four Fall Prevention Exercises:

1. Tai Chi: This gentle, flowing exercise improves balance, coordination, and leg strength through slow, controlled movements. Practicing Tai Chi for 15–30 minutes, 2–3 times per week, can significantly reduce fall risk.
2. Heel-to-Toe Walking: Walking in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other, enhances coordination and stability. Practice for 10–20 steps, 2–3 times daily, using a wall or support if necessary.
3. Sit-to-Stand Exercises: Repeatedly standing up from a chair and sitting back down strengthens leg and core muscles. Perform 8–12 repetitions, 2–3 sets daily, using armrests for support if needed.
4. Single-Leg Stance: Standing on one leg for 10–30 seconds (holding onto a chair for support if needed) strengthens leg muscles and improves balance. Aim for 3 sets per leg daily, gradually increasing duration as balance improves.
