A quick story .... During one of my regular muscular dystrophy check-ups (at Johns Hopkins), the doctor asked me if I was waking up with headaches. "Yes." I answered, I was waking up with headaches. He explained to me that he thought the FSHD (my muscular dystrophy) might be weakening my diaphragm. This weakening would cause me to not exhale completely, retaining carbon dioxide, and giving me the headaches. The doctor wanted me to take a breathing test and we scheduled one. In the meantime, I reached out to my Sifu (kung fu teacher) and we started practicing more focused (qigong) breathing exercised to help strengthen my diaphragm and improve my breathing. Almost immediately, the headaches stopped. I subsequently took the breathing test and the results showed normal.
